Key Stakeholder Participant Information

Designing & piloting an intervention to combat sexual racism

You can download a PDF copy of this form by clicking here.

What is the research about?

You are invited to participate in a research study to design and pilot a ‘sexual racism’ intervention in Australia. Sexual racism is a pervasive form of racism, with implications for our intimate lives but also for our society more generally.

The insights you provide will be used to develop a new intervention that aims to enhance the resilience of people exposed to sexual racism. Specifically, we are seeking input from stakeholders, experts, activists, influencers and others, drawing upon your expertise to inform the intervention’s design and function. Eventually, we will test this intervention as part of another separate study.

Who is conducting this research?

The study is being carried out Associate Professor Denton Callander (Kirby Institute, UNSW) and Doctor Gene Lim (Australian Research Centre in Sex, Health and Society, La Trobe University). This project is funded by UNSW.

Who is included in this research?

This study aims to recruit researchers, activists, journalists, influencers, and other ‘key stakeholders’ who have a public profile of anti-sexual racism work. To be eligible, participants must be 18 years and older, able to speak English, and living in Australia.

Do I have to take part? What does participation require?

If you decide to take part, you will be asked to participate in a virtual workshop, which should last around two hours. During the workshop, you will be asked to discuss your personal and professional understandings of sexual racism, with the primary aim of identifying intervention opportunities. The proceedings of this workshop will be audio recorded to make a written transcript, which will be de-identified. You may choose to discontinue participation at any point, but please note it will not be possible to remove your contributions to the workshop until this point.

What are the possible benefits to participation?

We do not expect participation in this study to benefit you personally, although you will be compensated 100 AUD for your time and input. More generally, however, we expect the findings of this study will be to the benefit of Australian society.

What will happen to information about me?

If you decide to take part, we will collect some basic sociodemographic information. We will also create a textual transcript of the workshop’s proceedings, which will include your inputs. As noted, this transcript will be de-identified and nothing you share will be linked to you personally.  We may choose to publish an analysis of the workshop results. To ensure privacy and confidentiality, your name or workplace will never be shared in any publication.

The research team will store the data collected from you for this research project for a minimum of 5 years after the completion of this project. Excepting the audio recording, the information will be stored in a re-identifiable format, where any identifiers such as your names will be replaced by unique codes. Once transcription is complete, the audio recording will be encrypted and archived securely; it will not be used as a primary data source, but only to verify results should this be required. All study data will only be used by members of the investigative team and not shared with others, including for secondary purposes.

How will I find out what the results of the research study are?

Once the overall study is complete, you will receive a summary of our findings. These will be delivered to you directly via email.

What if I want to withdraw from the research study?

As mentioned, participation in this study is completely voluntary. You may choose to withdraw at any time, which will not affect your relationship with UNSW Sydney or any of this study’s partners. If you withdraw from the research, we will destroy your contact details and sociodemographic information. It will not be possible, however, to remove any of your contributions to the workshop up until that point.

The information you provide is personal information for the purposes of the Privacy and Personal Information Protection Act 1998 (NSW). You have the right of access to personal information held about you by the University, the right to request correction and amendment of it, and the right to make a compliant about a breach of the Information Protection Principles as contained in the PPIP Act.
